Facts About Hyaluronic Acid
Also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate, hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the human body and is central to regulating cell growth and renewal. It is found connective, epithelial, and neural cells. Hyaluronic acid has become a common ingredient in many skin care products and anti-wrinkle formulas. It has also been known to extend the life of those who take copious amounts of this in their diet. Hence, the media has dubbed it the “key to the fountain of youth.”
The fact that hyaluronic acid binds with water accounts for the special interest in this substance in dermatology. When this is injected under the skin, it provides an appearance of fullness at the site, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles for approximately six months. But while this acid may be called a beauty enhancer, it can also decrease the appearance of skin. I might even cause tissue damage. This is because hyaluronic acid degrades in the presence of at least seven enzymes classified as hyaluronidases. But since this acid plays an important role in tissue repair, it has a solid application in several medical treatments.
