Potential Anti-Aging Treatment

Superoxide dismutase is an enzyme that helps break down potentially harmful oxygen molecules in cells. It is hoped that this might prevent damage to tissues. It is being researched to see if it can help conditions where oxygen molecules are believed to play a role in disease. Superoxide dismutase or SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. They are important in defending cells exposed to oxygen.

Superoxide is the most common free radical in the body. SOD is an enzyme that repairs cells and reduces the damage of superoxides. SOD is found in both the dermis and the epidermis. It is the key to the production of skin building cells. There are current studies on its potential as an anti-aging treatment.
