Sinus pain relief

Some of the worst pains can be caused by a sinus headache. When the sinus is inflamed it is called sinusitis. A typical case of acute sinusitis begins with a cold or “flu” or an allergy attack that causes swelling of the nasal membranes and increased watery mucous production. The membranes can become so swollen that the tiny openings from the sinuses become blocked. When mucus and air cannot flow easily between the nose and sinuses, abnormal pressures occur in the sinuses, and mucus can build up in them. This creates a pressure-pain in the forehead or face, between and behind the eyes, or in the cheeks and upper teeth, depending on which sinuses are involved.

Sinus pain relief is easily available through medications. If there is suspicion that sinusitis is caused by bacteria, giving an antibiotic such as amoxicillin will kill the bacteria. A decongestant will reduce the swelling of the mucous membranes in the nose. An analgesic will relieve the pain and a mucolytic will thin the mucus. These medications are given either alone or in conjunction with each other depending on the need.
