For thousands of years, licorice has been used in food and medicinal remedies. It is also known as “sweet root”. Both Eastern and Western medicine value licorice. Some health benefits of licorice root range from the treatment of the common cold to liver disease. This herb has also been regarded as a soothing agent and expectorant in respiratory conditions.

Health professionals today still use licorice to treat ailments like allergies, sore throats, stomach problems, skin diseases, stress, inflammatory disorders, and liver problems. Licorice grows wild in some parts of Asia and Europe and grows 3-to 7-feet high. Supplements are made from the roots and underground stems of the plant.
